OVERVIEW
This text is designed for the Introduction to Communication course (also known as the Hybrid course). In Communicating Effectively, students learn the foundation of communication studies through numerous examples ranging from the campus to the workplace to communities both in the United States and throughout the world.
Brief readings from the popular press further encourage students to relate to communication theories. In addition, every chapter contains numerous activities that engage students and promote groupwork.
New to the Seventh Edition
- A new chapter on
intercultural communication.
While discussions on cross-cultural and intercultural communication are
interwoven throughout the text, the new Chapter 3 significantly expands the
information on this topic.
- Chapter 4,
"Listening," includes new sections on "Note-Taking
Skills" and "Talking So Others Will Listen" - useful
skills that students can apply throughout their college career and beyond.
- New interactive
"Try This" boxes
challenge readers' foundations, examine assumptions, uncover attitudes,
question knowledge, assess ability, analyze skills and confidence, probe
anxiety, review preparation, and survey understanding. Students complete a
chapter-relevant questionnaire, survey, or evaluation form in the text and
then go to the book's web site for answers and explanations.
- The revised
chapter on nonverbal communication (Chapter 6) includes new research as
well as new suggestions for evaluating nonverbal effectiveness using
videotape.
- New sections on
"Bids and the Bidding Process", "Owned Messages", and
"Relational Dialectics"
strengthen the interpersonal communication chapter (Chapter 7).
- New material on
using the Internet
to discover a topic, Internet brainstorming, comparing subject directories
with search engines, and cyber relationships appears in Chapters 12 and 13.

Review from Amazon.com
Communicating Effectively
We use this book at the Florida
State University to teach a Freshman/Sophomore level Public Speaking class.
It's a great book because it's simple and straight-forward. It approaches the
student with real-world examples and presents solutions for the individual to
overcome fears/roadblocks to public speaking.
I recommend this book as a textbook
for any student of public speaking. It's also written so it can be read cover
to cover so it can be used out of the classroom! (Review
