About Richard Weaver

Dr. Richard L. Weaver II has been publishing books since 1974.  Including all of the editions, he has written close to forty books.  His college textbooks have been bestsellers in their respective fields.  Understanding Interpersonal Communication, went into its seventh edition at HarperCollins in 1996, and Communicating Effectively, co-authored with Saundra Hybels, and published with McGraw-Hill is going into its sixth edition in 2001.  His first trade book, Listen to Win (co-authored with Curt Bechler) was published in 1994.  Essentials of Public Speaking, published with Gorsuch Publishing Company in 1996 is going into its second edition with Allyn & Bacon in 2001.  Also, thirteen of his speeches have been published in Vital Speeches of the Day, and more than 100 articles on speech communication and related areas, chapters in books, and reprints of his work are in print as well.  A list of Dr. Weaver's publications, awards and honors can be found on his Bibliography and Awards Page.

Formerly a professor in the Department of Interpersonal Communication at Bowling Green State University, he received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. from Indiana University.  He taught at the University of Massachusetts, the University of Hawaii, at five different universities in Australia, and for twenty-two years at Bowling Green before taking early retirement in 1996.  In more than 30 years of teaching, he taught more than 60,000 students and trained more than 700 graduate teaching assistants.

Dr. Weaver was nominated for Bowling Green's Master Teacher Award almost every year since 1982.  He had been a semi-finalist and a finalist for the Award--most recently in 1992.  He is Bowling Green's winner of the College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Excellence Award.

Dr. Weaver lives in Perrysburg, Ohio, with his wife.  They have four adult children.  His hobbies include music, travel, reading, writing, and gardening.  With his retirement from active teaching, he is now at work on a number of book projects.
