QuickTake

An entertaining, three act comedy/drama version of the parable of the Prodigal Son set in renaissance times presented entirely in rhyme. Our story changes the Prodigal Son to a Prodigal Princess. It is a story of undeserved love, humility and forgiveness.

NARRATOR:  I speak of Knight Dashmore who causes hearts of ladies to flutter.
The rest of the men? Oh, they just mutter.
They try to impress wearing new fashions right off of the loom!
But all is forgotten when (points at Dashmore) HE walks in the room.

DASHMORE: Princess Grace, where are you? You promised to meet!
NARRATOR: Oh! Let’s stick around! This will be a treat!
GRACE: Stebbins! Oh, Stebbins! Don’t discourage my heart!

(characters freeze as Narrator continues)

NARRATOR: Oh! One more thing I should have said from the start:
His full name is Knight Stebbins Milford Dashmore, can it be?
Repeat that before Dashmore? The next day you won’t see!
DASHMORE: I told you: ‘never betray my true name!’
GRACE: But it’s so cute and noone’s here, you have no need for shame!
DASHMORE: CUTE is something I do not wish to be.
GRACE: But cute you are, STEBBINS, take it from me!
DASHMORE: I’m sorry my dear, I don’t mean to be sore.
But, I miss you so much!
GRACE: I miss you, more.

(Suddenly Queen Mum stumbles in and begins to speak
as Dashmore steps in front of Princess Grace and draws his sword.)

MUM: Stebbinly, Kebbinly, Doodley Squat
A flower won’t bloom when put in that pot.
GRACE: Stebbins! It’s Queen Mum! You’ll scare her to death!
DASHMORE: I’m sorry but she almost took my last breath!
GRACE: It’s okay, dear Mum, there’s no need to fret.
DASHMORE: I can think of a reason she might be upset.
GRACE: Besides a sword pointed straight at her face?
DASHMORE: She saw us together! Right here! In this place!
GRACE: So you think she can see us but yet she can’t hear?
DASHMORE: All I know is Queen Mum gives me reason to fear.
GRACE: She’s not well in the head as I’ve told you before.
DASHMORE: Grace, it could have been anyone who walked through that door.
Where’s Isabel? Where’s Fellmore? What about Angelique?
GRACE: What’s so special about now? This isn’t unique!
DASHMORE: We stand on the terrace where anyone can see.
And I don’t like this I tell you, this should not be.
GRACE: But why? Why must we keep this secret and hide?
DASHMORE: Your sister’s judgment you could never abide.
