Georgette:
(triumphant) I told you, Beelze.
She couldn’t cover up the murder forever.
Finally, my stepmother is going to get
what’s coming to her.
Beelze:
Don’t be so excited. It all seems a little
hinky to me. The police never found
evidence of foul play and you still don’t
have any evidence and you have no idea
what Evil Dog knows anyway.
Georgette:
Evidence? What other evidence do I need?
The police simply couldn’t figure out how
she did it. Bonita convinced my father to
take me out of his will and then she
killed him. Evil Dog knows it and soon the
world will know it, too.
Beelze:
Don’t get your hopes up.
Georgette:
(pleading) Why can’t you just be
excited for me, Beelze?
Beelze:
A happy customer is no customer at all.
Georgette:
Oh, come on Beelze. You can’t mean that.
Beelze:
Look around, Georgette. How many happy
people do you see in here?
Georgette:
Not this time. You’re not going to get me
down. But you can help me. Where’s
Evil Dog?
Beelze:
You’re looking for trouble, Georgette. You
don’t go searching for a mob boss.
(deadly serious) If he has business
with you, he’ll find you.
(Just
then, Pips enters.)
Georgette:
(determined) I’m not waiting.
Beelze:
(pointing to Pips) Then maybe you
need to talk to him.
Pips:
Hey, Beelze.
Beelze:
I might have drummed up some business for
you. (walks back
behind the bar)
Georgette:
Business?
Beelze:
Yeah, he’s a private eye.
Pips:
(pulls out a business card and his
notepad) Detective Pips Domino. And
you are?
Georgette:
Georgette Vanbushenbury.
Pips:
(very interested) Any relation to
Bonita Vanbushenbury?
Georgette:
(seriously sarcastic) The murderer?
Yes. That’s my stepmother.
Pips:
Why does Beelze think you got some
business for me?
Georgette:
I have to find Evil Dog. Ever hear of him?
Pips:
(tries not to show his shock as he
begins scribbling notes) His name
seems to be floating around lately. What
business do you have with him?
Georgette:
He has evidence that would prove my father
was murdered.
Pips:
How do you know that?
Georgette:
A couple of his lackeys were spitting on
about how Evil Dog knew the truth about my
stepmother.
Pips:
A couple of lackey’s?
Georgette:
Beelze knows them. Don’t you, Beelze.
Beelze:
Just a couple of fakaloo artists takin’
her for a rube. I gave ‘em the up and down
but that’s all.
Pips:
You seen them before?
Beelze:
Yeah. They were bothering Stella
yesterday. I had a mind to call copper on
‘em.
Pips:
That would be the last thing you’d do,
Beelze. You don’t want them to know the
way you bunco some around here.
Georgette:
(to Pips) Evil Dog contacted my
stepmother.
Pips:
(surprised) How do you know that?
Georgette:
She called me this morning. She thinks I
got her in dutch with him. I didn’t have
anything to do with it. I don’t even know
who Evil Dog is. I want to know what’s
going on. Can you help me?
Pips:
I can get a slant. A pair of Cs will get
me started and we can talk about the rest
once I find Mr. Dog.
