little formatting - the actual script uses
full formatting with hanging indents and
each line numbered.)
This
is from the BUSINESS vignette:
NATHAN:
(slowly) Mr. Lawrence, with all due respect, I
can't sign this company report. It isn't
true. After all that's happened over the last
two years you should know what danger there is
in this. In good conscience, I can't sign it.
JOHN: (now very sternly) Can your good
conscience handle this company losing over half
of our employees? I built this company from the
ground up. This started as a family business.
(Nathan just looks at him) Can your good
conscience handle seeing a company that has
helped so many people go down in flames? We're
at the edge here, Nathan. For me, for our
employees, for this company (pausing as he hands
the report back to Nathan) and for you. Look, I
know how hard things have been for you since
your wife died. You've done an amazing job with
your kids considering the situation. You
wouldn't want to jeopardize what you have.
NATHAN: What are you saying?
JOHN: (sternly) I'm saying that I expect
to have that report signed and on my desk
tomorrow morning. This conversation is over.
(John walks away)
(Nathan
goes to the chair and sits, holding the red
paper with his head in his hands. Just then, his
children burst into the room - there can be as
many or as few as necessary.)
CHILDREN:
Daddy's home!
NATHAN: (trying to smile) Hi, kids! Did
you have a good day at Nana's house?
CHILDREN: Yes. We missed you.
NATHAN: I missed you too. Now, go
upstairs and get your pj's on. I'll be up to
tuck you in.
CHILDREN: I love you Daddy.
NATHAN: I love you, too.
(The
kids leave as the lights begin to dim. Nathan
continues to stare at the paper.)
NATHAN:
(praying) Lord, Jesus. I have tried to follow
you in everything. I know what I am supposed to
do, but how can I do it? Why does it have to be
me?
(Nathan
remains seated with his head down as the light
dims)
